An Interview with Billy Thompson, founder of All Star Movers
November 7th, 2008 12:05 PM

Today, we are pleased to be speaking with Billy Thompson, founder of All Star Movers.

VOH: You are the founder and past owner of All Star Movers.  What inspired you start the company and how did you do it?

My moving history begins as a summer job.  I was moving people every summer during college.  Moving got into my blood.

Then I found that I was on the road too much moving families from state to state.  I missed softball as it is one my passions.  I ended up selling furniture and found that customers of the business always wanted to borrow the delivery truck to move.  We started the moving business on the side during a slow down in the retail furniture business.  It instantly took off.  That was 1976.

VOH: You have had an active role with the Vienna-Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce over the years.  How has that shaped your views regarding the growth in the area and the possible Metro stop in Tysons Corner?

The Chamber holds a valuable place because of its role as a link between residents and business.  I agree in principle that Tysons needs to be fixed.  But I don’t agree with the amount of growth supported by the Tysons Task Force due to the impact it will have on surrounding communities.

VOH: Billy, you grew up in and around Vienna.  What are some of the more memorable changes that come to mind when you pause to look back?

When my family moved to Vienna in 1959 there was no 495 beltway, no Route 66, no Tysons Corner Mall.  As kids we would ride dirt bikes all over the site for the new mall.  But whenever there is change, there is opportunity.  We would collect empty soda bottles from the construction site and cart them off to the Giant food store to turn them in for change.

VOH: When you do have free time, what do you like to do?

I like to spend time with my grandchildren.  I love golf, rooting for the local sport’s teams, especially the Redskins.  Love Karaoke.  Every holiday I dress up as Santa Claus.

VOH: What are some of your favorite stores, businesses and/or sites to patronize here in Oakton and Vienna?

The Vienna Inn is where I catch up with old friends.  I like Vienna Presbyterian Church for Sunday mornings.  And the food at Bazin’s is great.  But I miss the lunch counter at the Vienna Rexall.

VOH: In addition to the roll that you currently play at All Star Movers, you are now preparing for a new career as a Realtor here in Northern Virginia?  What prompted you to do that?

I sold my interest in All Star Movers in October, 2007.  An employee who grew up in the business expressed interest in owning the company and we made a deal.

After 32 years I was ready for a change.  But moving people will always be my passion.  And so with my segue into the real estate market and becoming a realtor I will still be helping to move families.  Knowing the area, people, the housing market, my ability and work ethic, I will work as hard as I can to provide the best service to my clients.

Billy Thompson, thank you for taking time from your busy schedule to speak with us.
